Update the SpyWinAds app

This article helps you learn how the SpyWinAds app updates itself and how to update manually.

Windows: the app updates itself

  1. The app downloads the new version by itself. While running, the app checks for new versions and downloads them in the background. The SpyWinAds icon menu says “Downloading new version …”.
  2. The app installs itself when idle. After the download, the app installs when you don’t have the app window open and the app isn’t in the middle of a scan. After installing, the app reopens by itself. If you quit the app or shut down the computer, the app installs then too.
  3. To install right away: click the notification bell in the app. Under “New version available”, click “Update now”. The app reopens by itself after installing, and any unfinished scan continues. If you click “Update later”, the app installs by itself when you close the window.
  4. Or use the icon menu: when the new version has finished downloading, the top line says “Restart to update to …”. Click that line.

Mac: download the new version

  1. The app tells you there is a new version. Your Mac shows a “A new SpyWinAds version is available” notification. The menu bar menu has a “Download new version …” line. The bell in the app has a “New version available” item.
  2. Download the installer. Click “Download update” in the bell, or the “Download new version …” line in the menu bar. The app downloads the right version for Apple silicon or Intel.
  3. Replace the old version. Choose “Quit SpyWinAds” in the menu bar. Open the .dmg file you just downloaded and drag SpyWinAds into Applications to replace the old version.
  4. Reopen the app. If macOS blocks the first launch, do as in the Mac section of Install the app. macOS may ask for microphone permission once more: click “Don’t Allow”.

Check manually

  1. Open the SpyWinAds icon menu (Windows: right-click the icon at the right end of the taskbar; Mac: click the icon in the menu bar).
  2. Choose “Check for updates”.
  3. The app answers with a dialog: “You are on the latest version”, or says it is downloading a new version. If the dialog says “Couldn’t check for a new version”, check your network and try again.
The current version is shown in the icon menu (the “Version …” line) and in the left sidebar of the app (the “SpyWinAds …” line, with the words “Latest version” when it is the latest). After updating, the app says “Updated to SpyWinAds …” and any unfinished scan continues by itself.
